The manuscript I am working on is a paranormal fiction. I’m quite enamoured with the genre because of it’s practically limitless potential for Buffy-style humour and wisecracks, but I am most definitely not enamoured with the ‘romantic’ paranormal fiction. I’m not a romantic person by nature, so I suppose that’s part of the reason why I dislike it, but the other reasons include not understanding why all powerful supernatural dudes always seem to fall in love with a clumsy, awkward, outcast, misunderstood and angsty teenage girl. Opposites attract?
Right, so I am not writing a paranormal romance story. There is more romance to be found in my cat’s litter box than in my heart and soul, let’s get that straight right up. As I said, I love the genre for it’s potential for snarkiness and black humour, so I want to create a work of fiction which reflects that.
The story is set in the modern day world with a supernatural skew to it, where nothing ends up being quite as it seems. The protagonist learns how the world really is and has to come to terms with her place in it, a place she really doesn’t want to be as it goes against everything she wants to believe in.
That’s all I’m willing to give away for now until I’ve done some more work on it.
What is your take on paranormal fiction?
I love paranormal fiction! My current project is also set in modern times, my lead character witnesses the death of a friend and begins to experience paranormal activity afterwards. Good luck to you!
